You travel back to the European country responsible for your asylum application

Last updated: 27/03/2025, 08:17

If the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) makes the final decision that you must return to the European country where you first sought asylum, you must be back in this country within six months.

You get help travelling to the other European country

You will get help in travelling to the country that has to process your asylum application. This journey is called the 'overdracht' (transfer). This must happen within 6 months, if the other country accepts the request to process your asylum application.

There are three ways you can travel to the other European country:

  1. You can travel back independently. If you want to do so, you can contact the

    Repatriation and Departure Service (DT&V)
    .

  2. Someone working for the Dutch government brings you back. This happens if you do not leave voluntarily.

  3. Someone working for the government of the other European country collects you. This happens if you do not leave voluntarily.

Until you travel back to the country processing your asylum application, you are entitled to a place in a reception centre in the Netherlands.
