Too few places in reception centres for refugees from Ukraine upon arrival in the Netherlands

Published at: 13/03/2025, 00:00

In the Netherlands, municipal reception locations for refugees from Ukraine are very full. Have you just arrived in the Netherlands? Then you must still report to a municipality. The municipality will then find out for you where you can go to a reception centre. You can also arrange a place to live yourself, in which case you have to register with a municipality.

All locations where refugees from Ukraine can register are very full

Currently, almost all places in reception centres for Ukrainians are occupied. The municipality's application locations in Rotterdam and Utrecht have also been closed because they are overcrowded.

The municipality is responsible for your reception upon arrival in the Netherlands

The municipality is responsible for your place in a reception centre when you arrive in the Netherlands. If the municipality cannot find a place for you, the municipality will ask the

Dutch Regional Coordination Centre for Refugee Dispersal (RCVS)
to look for a place in a reception centre for you. If there are no places in reception centres in the region either, the municipality will have to ask the Dutch National Coordination Centre for Refugee Dispersal (LCVS) to find a place in a reception centre for you.

Does the municipality refuse to take you in or find a place for you? Then contact the online consultation hours of

VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (VWN)
. VWN cannot offer you a place in a reception centre, but it can give you information on what the best thing to do is in your situation.

To get temporary protection you must register with the municipality

Once you have found a place in a reception centre and have been registered by the municipality, the IND can see if you will be granted temporary protection in the Netherlands. After the municipality has registered you, you will have to make an appointment with the

Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND)
for this within four weeks.
