You apply to become a Dutch citizen at the municipality where you live

Last updated: 18/04/2025, 11:28

Do you want to become a Dutch citizen? Then you make a 'naturalisatieverzoek' (naturalisation request) with the municipality and pay for the request.

You make the request to your municipality

You must go to the municipality yourself to apply to become a Dutch citizen. There you fill in the application form to become a Dutch citizen together with an employee of the 'Burgerzaken' (Civil Affairs) department. Check your municipality's website or call the municipality to ask if you need to make an appointment first.

You cannot make a request to become a Dutch citizen online.

If you want your children to become Dutch citizens too, their names must also be included in the application. Children 12 years and older must also come with you to the appointment at the municipality.

It costs money to become a Dutch citizen

You need to pay to apply to become a Dutch citizen. The money you pay is called 'leges' (fees). You pay these fees when you submit the application. The municipality determines the amount you have to pay. The municipality will only process your request once you have paid. A request costs the following:

  • A request costs €811 per person.

  • You pay €1,114 for a request by you and your partner. You do not have to be married to each other to file a request for partners. But you must have a relationship with each other and live together.

  • You pay a fee of €161 for minor children who become Dutch citizens together with their parent(s).

You promise to pronounce the 'verklaring van verbondenheid' (declaration of commitment)

When you apply for naturalisation at the municipality, you must promise that when you become a Dutch citizen you will pronounce a 'verklaring van verbondenheid' (declaration of commitment). You must sign a paper for this when you apply at the municipality. Minors aged 16 years and older must also pronounce this declaration when they become Dutch citizens, so they must also sign a paper already at the municipality.

The municipality prepares a recommendation and sends your application to the IND

The municipality checks that your personal information is correct and that you meet all the conditions. Then the municipality draws up a recommendation. In their recommendation, they write whether or not they think you can become a Dutch citizen. The municipality will send this recommendation together with your application to the

Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND)
. You will receive a confirmation of receipt from the IND. This letter also tells you how the procedure to naturalise works and what is expected of you.
