What is a permanent residence permit?

Last updated: 25/09/2024, 11:34

A permanent residence permit allows you to stay in the Netherlands forever. This permit is officially called a "verblijfsvergunning asiel voor onbepaalde tijd" (permanent asylum residence permit).

Difference between temporary and permanent permit

With a temporary permit, the Dutch government gives you permission to stay in the Netherlands temporarily. A permanent residence permit allows you to stay in the Netherlands forever.

If you apply for asylum in the Netherlands, you always get a temporary permit first. You can only apply for a permanent permit if you have lived in the Netherlands for 5 consecutive years with a temporary asylum residence permit.

Greater certainty about your future in the Netherlands

If the

Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND)
give you a permanent residence permit, you can stay in the Netherlands forever. So with a permanent residence permit, you have more certainty about your future in the Netherlands than with a temporary residence permit.

The IND can only stop your residence permit in the following situations:

  • If you did not provide the right information about yourself and your situation and the IND finds out.

  • If you commit a serious crime and are convicted of it.
