Published at: 07/03/2024, 00:00

Have you received a letter from the Dutch tax authorities telling you to file an income tax return? If so, you must report to them how much money you earned or received over the past year.

File a tax return by 1 May 2024

Every year, starting 1 March, you can file a tax return for the previous year. This means you report to the

Dutch tax authorities
how much money you made from your job. You can now file a tax return for the year 2023. You must do this before 1 May 2024 or you could be fined.

Did you not work but received a letter from the Dutch tax authorities? Then you still have to file a tax return. Even if you receive government benefits, you must report how much money you received.

Sometimes you get money back from the Dutch tax authorities

When you file a tax return, the Dutch tax authorities calculate whether you have paid enough tax to the Dutch government. After filling out your tax return, you can see if you paid exactly enough tax, if you get money back or if you have to pay money.

You will receive an official letter from the Dutch tax authorities after you have filed your tax return. And before which date you have to do this.
