Temporary Protection Directive extended for Ukrainians

Published at: 08/07/2024, 00:00

If you have Ukrainian citizenship or a permanent residence permit for Ukraine, you can stay in the Netherlands at least until 4 March 2026. This was confirmed by the Dutch government after the European Union decided to extend the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD).

The European Union has extended the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD)

The

Council of the European Union
decided to extend the
TPD
by 1 year. This means refugees from Ukraine can now stay in EU countries until 4 March 2026.

The Netherlands will follow this decision, which means that if you have Ukrainian citizenship or a permanent residence permit for Ukraine, you can now stay in the Netherlands until 4 March 2026.

You cannot yet apply for asylum in the Netherlands

Because you fall under the TPD, your rights differ from a standard asylum application. You will fill out an official asylum application, but it will not be processed. You will not meet with the

Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND)
because you can stay and work in the Netherlands right away.

Because the TPD has been extended, your asylum application will still not be processed. You cannot stop your temporary protection to apply for asylum. It is not clear what will happen when the TPD stops after 4 March 2026.

Without Ukrainian citizenship, you are entitled to protection in the Netherlands until the European court's ruling

If you do not have Ukrainian citizenship or a permanent residence permit for Ukraine, you are entitled to temporary protection until the European court rules on the right to temporary protection. You are entitled to temporary protection in the Netherlands until 4 March 2025.
