Continuing to work during the asylum process
If you fall under the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) until 4 September 2023 and you have responded to the letter from the IND that you want to start the asylum procedure, you may work under the Temporary Protection Directive until 4 September. After 4 September, you may perform paid work because you applied for asylum.
Under these conditions, you may work for pay from 4 September 2023:
You have a valid W-document.
You may work a maximum of 24 weeks per year (52 weeks) starting on 4 September. The weeks you have already worked during your Temporary Protection do not count.
Your employer has a work permit (TWV) to hire you.
Are you under the age of 18? If you are 16 or 17, special rules apply to how long you can work.
Your employer must apply for a work permit (TWV) for you
Your employer applies for the work permit from the Uitvoeringsinstituut Werknemersverzekeringen (UWV). You cannot do this yourself. The UWV decides on the application within 5 weeks. Therefore, let your employer know in time that they need to apply for a TWV.
If your employer has the TWV, you may work. The TWV is valid for 24 weeks. It does not matter how many hours you work per week. The UWV only looks at the number of weeks you will work.
