Volunteer work in the Netherlands

Last updated: 25/09/2024, 11:26

If you have fled Ukraine and fall under the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD), you may do volunteer work in the Netherlands. You do not need a work permit to do volunteer work.

Volunteering is unpaid work

Volunteering is work you do for others or for society without getting paid for it. You can volunteer if you enjoy it, or if you want to gain work experience. Through volunteer work you can also practice the Dutch language and meet Dutch people.

Sometimes you receive compensation for your volunteer work

Sometimes you get compensation when you volunteer. For example, for travel expenses or other costs you incur. This compensation does not affect the living and food allowance you receive. This is because the compensation is not income.

Since 1 January 2024, you may receive up to €210 per month or €2100 per year in compensation for your volunteer work. You may also receive compensation other than money. For example, a gift certificate or free training or workshop.

A volunteer permit will be requested for you

If you have found an organisation where you want to volunteer, this organisation must request a volunteer permit from the

Employee Insurance Agency (UWV)
. A volunteer permit is a letter stating that your volunteer work is not a paid job.

Once the organisation has received confirmation of the application, you may begin your volunteer work. The UWV will make a decision on the application within 2 weeks. You do not have to wait for the UWV's decision.

Sometimes you have to show you don't have a criminal record

Sometimes a job or voluntary work requires you to apply for a document showing that you do not have a criminal record. This document is called a

Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG)
. A VOG shows that you are trustworthy.

Different jobs may have different requirements. Often the organisation you will be working or volunteering with will apply for the VOG for you. You do not need a

personal number (BSN)
to apply for a VOG.

You can find volunteer work in these places

Volunteering can be done in many places. For example, in a community centre, at a school or in the library. You can ask your contact at

VluchtelingenWerk Nederland (VWN)
or a social worker from another organisation about the possibilities in your area.
