This is the result of the European elections

Published at: 01/07/2024, 00:00

After the European elections, the EPP is still the largest party, followed by S&D and Renew Europe. It is still unclear what future plans these parties will make. The asylum rules already adopted before the elections are likely to be implemented as usual.

These are the biggest parties after the election

In the European Elections, Europeans voted who should take the 720 seats in the European Parliament. The European People's Party (EPP) got the most votes again, taking 190 seats in parliament. The 2nd largest party is the Socialists & Democrats (S&D) with 136 seats. The 3rd and 4th largest parties are Renew Europe (90 seats) and the conservative ECR (76 seats).

(Radical) right-wing parties, which favour an even stricter asylum policy, also received more votes. Especially in Germany and France. But those parties did not become the largest in parliament.

Several parties will now combine to form a majority in parliament

The European Parliament can pass, amend or reject European laws. To do this job well, the parties in the parliament must work together to get a majority. The parliament does not make laws but, with a majority, it can approve or reject laws proposed by the

European Commission
.

Now the EPP and S&D will probably team up to be a majority in parliament again. They have done so for the past 5 years. But they need at least 1 more party for a majority. Renew Europe will probably be the party they ask to form a majority with them.

The parliament also elected someone to head the European Commission. That is Ursula von der Leyen, who has been doing so since 2019.

The European Parliament influences rules on migration and asylum in Europe

The European Parliament makes rules about how refugees are treated in the European Union (EU). All EU member states must abide by these European laws. The Netherlands is also a member of the EU, so it cannot just make its own rules.

Examples of rules made on a European level:

  • The

    Dublin Regulation
, which regulates which country is responsible for processing an asylum application.

  • The new European asylum rules recently adopted.

If a country deviates too much from European rules, the European Commission can take action to punish that country.

These are the consequences of the European elections on new asylum rules

The future plans for asylum and migration within the EU are still unclear. However, the asylum rules adopted before the election will probably be implemented. This is because the same parties have maintained a majority in parliament. These new rules will take effect in 2026 at the earliest.
