Are you starting an MBO education or continuing your education? You may not have to pay tuition fees if you fall under the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) or if you have applied for asylum. You can then apply from mid-September to not have to pay your tuition fees.

You must meet these conditions

Are you starting an MBO education or continuing your education? Then you do not have to pay tuition fees if you meet the following conditions:

  1. You are not entitled to study funding or any other contribution to your study costs because you do not have Dutch citizenship.

  2. You cannot pay the tuition fees and there is no organisation to pay it for you.

  3. You are 18 or older but under 31 on 1 August, at the beginning of the school year.

In addition, 1 of the following situations applies to you:

  • You have a

    W-document
    or
    W2-document
. You can tell this by the letter W or W2 next to the photo on your ID.

  • You have a type

    I-document
for medical treatment of yourself or a family member.

You may also not have to pay tuition after your 30th birthday

If you turned 30 or older during your education, you may still not have to pay tuition, if you meet the other rules. Starting on your 30th birthday, you must submit a request to

DUO
each year not to pay tuition.

This is only possible if you are enrolled in your education without interruption. So you cannot temporarily stop and start your education again. Every year you have to show DUO that you still meet the rules.

To reclaim your tuition fees, you must send a form to DUO

Starting in mid-September, you can fill out an application form and send it to

Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO)
. After you fill out the form and send it to DUO, you will receive a message from DUO telling you whether or not you have to pay tuition. Once the form to apply is available, you can find it on the website below.

The application form from DUO

On this page you will find the form to fill out to request that you do not have to pay tuition. This is called 'buiteninvorderingstelling'.

Do not pay your tuition until you have a response to your application from DUO

Do not pay your tuition fees for the 2024-2025 academic year until you have a response from DUO to your application. This is because if you have already paid your tuition fees, DUO cannot refund your money You can apply for the entire academic year from mid-September 2024 to 31 July 2025.
